944 Cup tribute build

Many years ago, before work, family and life got in the way, a young man drove a normally aspirated 944 and life was good.

Unfortunately that young man had to sell his 944, but he always dreamed of finding it and buying it back. This past weekend, with the help of a friend and the substantial financial backing of other friends, it happened.

But the dream doesn’t stop there. The 944Crew will be undertaking the ambitious and frankly ill-advised task of building a tribute to the 944 Cup cars originally constructed for the Rothmans Challenge Series in Canada. But 944 Cup cars are Turbo you insist! Correct, after 1987 they were, however to begin with they were normally aspirated and driven by the likes of Scott Goodyear, Paul Tracy and Ron Fellows. The livery we’re aiming for will be close to what was seen on chassis WP0ZZZ94ZGN455888 which raced in the Rothmans Series all through 1986 and 1987. It ran at all the races including Mosport, Montreal, Mont-Tremblant, Sanair and Shannonville, and finished mid to back of the pack at the hands of its first owner, an amateur driver.

Now the starting point…

Then seats and carpet out…

Now we’re making money!

Gross…

Strip out the back…

Check the corners…

There’s that wrench we were looking for!!!

The History of this old car

JustinL writing

Way way back in 1999 I bought this car during a brief period of time living in Boston. I brought the car back to Edmonton that summer and forever have my name attached to that chassis as the importer of record. It served me well as a daily driver and was my first track car with the PCA autocross and at stratotech. It was a hard day to see it go to our straightpipe friend Al (theamsoilguy). It was destined to become a father-son rebuild project, but unfortunately during a shakedown test at a Namao autocross a missed shift caused some as yet unknown damage to the engine which put this old car out of commission for the last 5 years.

I am happy to see the car go to a team passionate about the platform.

But I am sad to lose Justin as a chump car team mate in the Eagle Talon, at least I think thats whats going to happen. Justin did every endurance race with me in the Talon.

I met Justin when I did my first event at Stratotech in my Ls1 944. I knew from day one meeting him that he was a 944 junkie. I met Brock the day I broke this car and I think he was in a 924 that day at Namao.

But most importantly my wife is happy that I have one less car in storage.

Good luck with the build. I will go into the attic soon and pull out the spare parts I have for that car.

Just buy this one.
It's already got two turbos.
For twice the fun.
Just add stickers. It's even in Alberta. Has esteemed provenance in its history to boot.
It'll be cheaper in the long run.:)

What the eff? I've never seen that car before! I'm not sure how "chump legal" or legal for any race series short of STU that car is.

The 944 cup tribute is going to be built to be legal in as many series as possible including: chump, nascc (vintage, itj, pt), NASA spec944, and 944cup. There are some rule books that are incompatible, but with careful planning we can build it to be flexible.

Wheels

Bead blasted some wheels tonight. These are 928 wheels in 16X8 square setup. They are ugly wheels known as sewer lids, but they are light and strong.
