Default Dean's Wallet Racing Spec Miata Build

Yay! More Miata's!

Since my current Miata is built more to just be fast then comply with any rule set, and since no Nasa rule set for next year I decided to jump onto the spec miata band wagon for the time being.

I knew I wanted an NB, and was thinking a vvt motor would probably be helpful with Castrol's track layout, all those low speed corners..

Harder to find is a non 6 speed, also i through all my broken 5 speeds away years ago but eventually I found one.

Step one: find an NB2 (for less than 5000$)

Step two: Remove and rebuild motor

While the motor gets refreshed/cleaned, I'll pull the steering rack for a depower, clean up the engine bay and remove what I can (AC business,ps gear, strut brace)

Should keep me busy for a month or two as I order parts and a mass some spec miata specific necessities.

-Dean

I don't think there was one seal that was holding oil on this motor so took a couple hours to get it cleaned up

No metal in the oil pickup, always good to see lol

Oil pan seal fail, when you can't get that done right its no wonder the recently replaced cam and crank seals were also fubar'd

Next step is to build a proper work bench so I have some place comfortable to work then pull the head off for a proper cleaning and rebuild.

Those amateurs!

*secretly wonders about how well he replaced the seals on his own motor*

Edit:
This was at that shady dealer on St Albert Trail right? How was that?

The receipt I have is for a Mazda dealership in town so I'm kinda surprised everything was leaking.

Yup, well if you were buying this car thinking it was all good you'd be pissed but I didn't even need to drive it for the price I paid for it to be worth it. Main thing is the chassis is clean and in good shape.

Would not recommend that place unless you know what you're looking at.

I can't wait to have it setup the way I want it. Hopefully get the lift in this summer, then she'll be almost perfect.

Ok so workbench..

Alright now to the real work, engine disassembled and inspected.

Not terrible looking for the miles on it.

Looking more like a motor that might run for an hour or two

Looks like a fine contender Dean.

If you've got parts (ie: soft-top, seats, etc) that you'll want to sell off, let me know, as I can get the word out in the Wild Rose Miata Club.

Beware, nastyness below.

Can't really tell from the pic but this is slightly cleaned up

Cleaned valves

First lapping day of 2015! :P

So now the head is being cleaned and once I get some new gaskets and seals I'll start the reassembly.
