I have built intake manifolds .... I have facilities to weld aluminum (TIG welder).

Can confirm. Tool collection of epic proportions!

That would be fantastic. The old manifold can be chopped down to make it easier too.

A couple more pictures. The lesson for tonight is that if you buy a used engine, check EVERYTHING. The test port on the fuel rail was about to fall open and the coolant temp sensor was loosey goosey.

More disassembly pics. Head looks good, bores look good.

Looks like the rings are toast ... The clean edge of the piston indicates that. The oil coming up cleans the edge .... Fun fact of the day.

Pistons are out. I'm planning to do new rings (maybe total seal) with these pistons and 2mm shorter rods to bring the compression down to 9:1. Anything I should be thinking about with shorter rods? I don't think they are going to stick more than a bit out the bottom of the bore. In stock form, they stick out very slightly.

What rods? Is there something in the 2.5 family? Custom?

This is what I'm thinking. The 2mm short version is the specific rod that I like. The neck on the S2 rods is surprisingly narrow.

Is there a reason not to go with different pistons? Custom rods or custom pistons will both cost a fair bit (though I suspect that the rods will be a bit cheaper).

Generally, for power and longevity, it is better to have a longer rod than a shorter one. That said, some updated rods would probably not go amiss ... Though the same could be said of the pistons.

This is how my projects get out of hand.
